Liban - American University of Beirut

My name is Rana Haddad and I am the Design and Media Coordinator at the Academic Computing Center (ACC) in AUB. Rosie Nasr gave me your contact information so that I can contact you about a couple of ideas we might have for a Tempus proposal, with the hope that you can help us find partners.

Below are brief explanations of the ideas that we have. At a later time, I can send you a more detailed layout.

LEARNING OBJECT CREATION With the fast progress of the Design and Media Unit at ACC, we now have the need to start investing in the creation of learning objects. Learning Objects are “digital resources that can be re-used to support and enhance learning”. They might include, animation, simulation, video, audio, charts, images, etc.

Learning objects are becoming more and more popular with faculty members at AUB and as the Academic Computing Center for the university, it is our responsibility to provide support and help in finding and creating these objects. We would like to be able to train our staff in the software and expertise required to create learning objects, attend design conferences to be up to speed with what is out there pertaining to learning objects in education and have available all the resources needed to develop, create, store and archive learning objects.

BLENDED/HYBRID LEARNING PROJECT To follow suit with many North American and European universities, ACC would like to continue supporting and training AUB faculty members in redesigning their courses to be taught in a blended format. Blended learning is when a course is partly taught face-to-face and partly online. Face-to-face class time is reduced and replaced with online activities.

Currently, as a whole, we are not equipped to offer support University wide (and maybe nation wide). We would like to be able to train our staff members to become experts in blended course redesign, attend conferences and seminars about blended teaching and learning to be up to speed with what other universities are doing and offer incentives for faculty members to follow the path of blended teaching.

I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Rana Haddad
